Interactive Art

Interactive art describes the use of computer technology to develop art objects.

Although not quite a mainstream artistic endeavor, the interaction of art and technology is delivering some creative, innovative and exciting works of art. Techniques used include interactive objects, multi-media, sound and light based creations.

Students will use software, hardware (including Arduino micro-controllers) and other “found objects” to build an exciting interactive art object. These objects can interact with people or the environment through the use of sensors for sound, light or other environmental factors and can produce reactions ranging from simple call and response or they could deliver email, SMS, Tweets or update your Myspace page.

These techniques can also be used to model large amounts of data in creative ways and produce interactive data sets and interesting data visualisation.

The aims of this course are to give students the skills to look at computer technology in a new and innovative way and understand how technology can be integrated into art. Students will also learn about the history of interactive art and understand some of the key technologies and artists in this exciting new medium.
